  • High-octane series based on Simon Mayo books

Friday 30th October 2020: ITCH, the Komixx Entertainment-produced and internationally-acclaimed children’s live-action adventure series, is to air on CBBC, starting this Monday (2nd November).

The 10 x 30-minute series is based on the characters from the best-selling books by popular British broadcaster and author Simon Mayo, and has already aired on ABC ME and iview in Australia and on BYU in the US. The international success of the first series has led to the commissioning of a second.

The show will be available on the BBC iPlayer from Monday 2nd November and will run twice weekly on CBBC on Mondays and Thursdays at 5pm, also beginning from Monday 2nd November.

ITCH follows the adventures of Itchingham Lofte, a teenager obsessed by science, who has the unusual hobby of collecting all the elements on the Periodic Table. In Series One, Itch obtains a previously unknown element that has the power to save the world – or destroy it. Pursued by a malevolent teacher, the government and an evil corporation all desperate to get their hands on the element, Itch has to draw on his science know-how to stay one step ahead of his adversaries.

The series was shot on location in the beautiful coastal town of Albany, Western Australia, where the Great Southern landscape is similar to the rugged coastline of Cornwall, the setting for the ITCH novels.

Says Simon Mayo: “One of the most exciting moments in my life was to go to Western Australia and meet the cast of ITCH. The characters, invented at a kitchen table in London, were now real people, living and breathing on a beach in Albany! The intention with ITCH was always to come up with an adventure where the magic was real. No spells and no wizards, just the even more incredible world of science. I am delighted to report that cast and production team of ITCH have triumphed! You too can be an element hunter!”

ITCH is a Komixx Entertainment production in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, ABC Commercial, Screen Australia, Screenwest and Western Australia Regional Film Fund.

Series One is written by Melanie Halsall, Dan Berlinka, Ron Elliott, Heather Wilson, Jessica Brookman and Roger Monk. It is directed by award-winning Australian director Nicholas Verso and Renee Webster. Produced by Amanda Morrison, Tania Chambers and Melanie Halsall, the series is executive produced by Michael Shyjka and Ed Glauser for Komixx Entertainment.

Series Two (10 x 30 minutes) of ITCH began principle photography on October 5 2020 within a safe ‘bubble’ given COVID-19 restrictions. ABC Australia, BYUtv in the US and BBC CBBC have all committed to the second series. These sales and others that are soon to be announced have all been negotiated by ABC Commercial.

Melanie Halsall, Komixx Entertainment Head of Development, who is also responsible for adapting the books into the television series, said: “Simon Mayo produced three high-octane ITCH novels based on a teenaged boy living in Cornwall. Together with ABC Australia and our regional funding partners we have brought these wonderful books to life in Western Australia, with its similar pristine coastline and now we’re delighted to have now started filming series two.”

Amanda Morrison, Managing Director of Komixx Entertainment Australia and Group Head of Global Production, led negotiations for the deal with ABC Australia. She said: “The first series of ITCH is a great hit for the ABC and we’re sure it will be a will be a huge success for CBBC.”

ITCH follows on from the success of other pre-school, children’s, young-adult and family broadcast entertainment hits from the London, Los Angeles and Perth-based Komixx Entertainment. The Komixx-produced The Kissing Booth 2, the second in a trilogy of films, topped Netflix movie charts following its launch in late July, with The Kissing Booth 3 set to hit screens in 2021. And the Komixx 52-episode 2D animation series ‘Dog Loves Books’ launched in 2020 on CBeebies, ABC Australia and German children’s network KiKA, featuring voices from award-winning British comedy actors John Thomson and Craig Cash.
